Pipe Opener I & II: What to Expect of the CT Schooling Day Format

Carolina Horse Park | December 5, 2025

When the gates of Carolina Horse Park open for Pipe Opener I and Pipe Opener II, riders are invited to begin the season with a relaxed, low-pressure format that embodies the spirit of preparation and learning. These “schooling days” are designed for flexibility, fun, and solid horsemanship; a perfect way to ease into competition without the weight of judged stress.

During Pipe Opener events, competitors have the choice between Combined Tests (dressage + jumping) or standalone dressage tests. Jumper rounds are offered as unjudged schooling rounds. Competitors enjoy the full use of the Park’s arenas, with the chance to warm up, practice, and fine-tune their skills before formally competing.

The beauty of the schooling format lies in its accessibility. Riders of all levels, from green horses taking first steps to seasoned athletes brushing off the rust, can participate. The emphasis is on learning, experience, and confidence building rather than ribbons or results. Many riders describe it as the perfect “tune-up,” allowing time to settle, gauge readiness, and recharge ahead of a full show season.

With no pretense and full use of CHP’s top-tier facilities, Pipe Opener I & II embody the Park’s commitment to community, development, and equestrian excellence. Whether you’re schooling dressage, jumping, or simply enjoying a low-key ride in the Sandhills, these events offer something for every horse and rider.
