The Beginning: A Vision Takes Shape
A part of our “Foundations: Building Carolina Horse Park” series. Denny Emerson shares the story behind Carolina Horse Park.
Founded in 1998 by a small group of equestrian enthusiasts with a shared vision, Carolina Horse Park has grown into a world-class destination celebrating horses, sport, community engagement, and land conservation.
As a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit corporation, we are committed to delivering exceptional equestrian experiences while building a sustainable legacy for horses, our community, and the land. From nationally recognized competitions and educational programs to community gatherings and year-round outdoor access, the Park serves as both a vibrant equestrian destination and a welcoming place to connect.
Here, world-class sport meets Southern hospitality. Open space is conserved with care. Neighbors become friends. And every event — whether in the arena, on the cross-country course, or across our rolling fields — reflects our commitment to excellence, stewardship, and community.

This thrilling event is the pinnacle of the Painted Ponies season, with all 16 ponies finding new homes through spirited bidding wars. In 2024, the auction raised over $100,000 for the Carolina Horse Park Foundation, with ponies selling for anywhere between $3,000 and $10,000. Proceeds directly support the Park’s mission to conserve open space, provide exceptional facilities, and host equestrian and community events.
